How Many Turmeric Pills Should You Take?
Turmeric is popular for joint pain, particularly knee pain from osteoarthritis. Several systematic reviews (collections of studies) have shown that turmeric can reduce pain and improve function for people who have knee osteoarthritis. Other studies have shown that turmeric can support health conditions with underlying inflammatory or immune problems such as ulcerative colitis (digestive system), irritable bowel disease, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, blood pressure, high cholesterol, mood, and cognitive deficits.
There are few side effects of turmeric and several studies have shown it to be as effective as NSAIDs for joint pain. For many conditions, the benefits of taking a turmeric supplement outweigh the risks, but how many turmeric pills should you take?
First, Look at the Supplement Facts Label
Before suggesting a dose, we need to identify the amount of turmeric extract in each capsule. Many turmeric brands fill their capsules with turmeric powder, but turmeric powder has a lower potency than turmeric extract. Turmeric extract is usually standardized to contain at least 95% curcuminoids. These curcuminoids are powerful compounds that provide most of the antioxidant and inflammation-fighting benefits in turmeric.
Turmeric powder contains approximately 5% curcuminoids so it’s better to choose a turmeric supplement that contains mostly turmeric extract because most studies used turmeric (curcumin) extract supplements.
The label should indicate the amount of turmeric powder or extract. Try to distinguish between the two because we’ll need to know how many mgs of turmeric extract are inside each capsule to determine the dose.
Why Should You Take Active Atoms Turmeric?
When we started this company in 2017, I was working as Physical Therapist and saw firsthand the negative effects of excessive inflammation on knee pain. My patients would usually take NSAIDs like Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation, but they often had negative side effects such as gastrointestinal issues.
I looked for alternatives to reduce their reliance on NSAIDs, and I kept finding research studies about curcumin, the active ingredient in Turmeric. Unfortunately, many of the existing supplements contained 50-150 mg of turmeric extract per capsule. So, in order to attain a dose of 1500 mg of turmeric extract (curcumin extract) per day, you would need to take 15 capsules per day.
My business partner had a difficult time swallowing capsules so the idea of taking 15 capsules per day sounded ridiculous. Active Atoms contains 750 mg of turmeric extract per capsule. You only need to take 1-2 capsules per day to obtain a therapeutic dose of curcumin. For this reason, we state that the amount of turmeric extract in Active Atoms is 15x stronger than many brands. It’s just more convenient and efficient to Active Atoms daily if you want a therapeutic dose of turmeric.

In summary, we believe most people should take 1500 mg of turmeric extract per day (2 capsules of Active Atoms) then tapering to 750 mg per day (one capsule of Active Atoms) for maintenance (consult with your physician first). However, obtaining 1500 mg of turmeric extract can be challenging because many turmeric supplements only contain 50-150 mg of turmeric extract per day.
Active Atoms Turmeric contains 750 mg of turmeric extract per capsule, standardized to contain 712.5 mg of curcuminoids. In addition, each capsule includes BioPerine® to boost absorption.
